While discussing some environmental issues with my wife,1 she reminded me of the song, “Colours of the Wind”, in Pocahontas (1995):

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you

The closing lines of the song go:

You can own the Earth and still
All you’ll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind.

Now, whatever you might think about the accuracy of Pocahontas (and all the other issues that go along with that), these lyrics are still something to behold.

  1. I should avoid giving the impression that we are so high-minded all the time. [return]
